Different Bund Lining Materials and Options
The most commonly used bund lining materials and options are solvent-free epoxy resins which have very good chemical resistance for the wide range of harsh chemicals often stored in industrial facilities. However there are many different types of epoxy resin coating and lining systems and each has it’s own specific advantages, disadvantages, limitations and benefits for use as a protective bund liner.
Typically a concrete or reinforced masonry structure is lined with a durable epoxy resin system. This system is fluid-tight and has excellent resistance to chemicals (depending on the type of chemical). It also has very high levels of mechanical strength which helps prevent movement stress cracking – something which can cause serious long term problems for bund walls that are not lined properly.
From Rubber to Reinforcement: Exploring the Diverse Materials for Effective Bund Lining Solutions
Another option is to line a bund with a flexible material such as a polyurethane or urea liner. These products are extremely strong and have good flexibility which can help prevent structural movement stress cracking of a bund wall. These materials can also be upgraded to offer better slip resistance which may be important in a facility where workers are moving around the bund or tank area.
Some sites may prefer to line a bund with an impermeable surface such as a GRP solution which can be installed quickly and is extremely durable and resistant to chemicals. This type of lining is especially useful in the case where a tank is being emptied or moved on site, or where a risk of spillage exists.
