Shrooms Canada and Other Psychedelic Mushroom Shops in Canada
In cities across Canada, psychedelic mushroom shops with names like Fun Guyz and Shroom City display painted images of colourful mushrooms on their storefronts to welcome customers in. They’re challenging the country’s archaic drug laws — and attracting attention from local authorities.
Psilocybin, found in many different kinds of Shrooms in Canada, is a powerful hallucinogen that can cause you to see and feel things that are not real (hallucinations). It’s classified as Schedule III on the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. It’s illegal to grow, buy or sell it in Canada unless you’re in a clinical trial or you have special permission from Health Canada through a doctor for therapeutic purposes.

But in 2023, the mushroom craze has spread to small towns and big cities across Canada. The federal government recently relaxed possession rules for cannabis, but not psilocybin. That’s sparking optimism and a raison d’être among psychedelic enthusiasts who are hoping that will change soon.
CBC News caught up with Josh Crabb, a reporter with CBC Manitoba, at a Winnipeg magic mushroom shop that’s openly defying the law. He says the owners of the store, dubbed Shrooms Canada, hope that the same shift in attitude toward psilocybin as happened with cannabis will occur for their business.
The store’s owners are working with police to make sure their product is being sold safely and only to adults. But they’re also aware that they might be opening themselves up to a series of raids like those that took place in Toronto, Montreal and Hamilton in recent months.
